More and more I am a believer of a staycation! Sometimes we get so lost in the day to day hustle and the holiday season madness that we completely forget to enjoy our surroundings and our loved ones. This is the second year my kids and I decided to do a staycation right before the holidays, and once again it has been a huge time of relaxation and genuine family time. This year our adventure took us downtown Columbus which proved to be full of Holiday Magic.
Tons of excitement in our house when I announced where we were staying this year…Hotel LeVeque. There was lots of cheering and “Are you serious?” I was quite serious. I had the amazing experience of seeing the Hotel Leveque during the hard hat renovation phase and I have been smitten with it ever since. The Hotel LeVeque has a rich architectural history and the renovation has brought together two unique themes of art deco and celestial stargazing constellations. The whole experience makes you feel like a star while under the stars. The moment you walk into the lobby you feel as though you have been whisked away to New York or Chicago, but yet you are in downtown Columbus, OH. The staff was over the top professional and friendly and met our every need right down to suggestions for dining and how to navigate the hotel.
The glitz and glam continued to our room with the jaw dropping corner space we had looking directly out at the Scioto River. Spectacular sunset and city traffic buzzing by. The first hour in the room we just watched the sunset and traffic settle down and suddenly what we had hoped for had happened. Relaxation. A time to just breathe and enjoy our Holiday Staycation adventure.
As we headed out for our evening we mapped out all the Holiday Lights we wanted to see and texted the valet for our vehicle. First up was Bicentennial Park and it was picture perfect with the Hotel LeVeque in the distance lit up in red and green! Next we headed to German Village and had dinner at my kids favorite, Schmidts. Then over to State Auto on Broad Street for a life size nativity scene and a live chorus performance. The nativity scene was very detailed and the chorus was belting out uplifting holiday music. State Auto also offered free hot chocolate! Our last destination was the Columbus Commons which was very whimsical and my kids ran around being carefree in the giant green space amongst the lights. I was impressed that my kids 12 and 15 were enjoying themselves this much! As we headed back to the hotel, both kids said that the nativity scene was their favorite and could we come back again next year!
Back at that hotel, I knew what was in store….. the signature turn down service. Yes, covers turned down, chocolates and a mini star projector with our own planetarium night sky on the ceiling! Lots of ooooh’s and ahhhh’s then the kids laid on the beds and just stared at stars. The nice thing about my kids being older was while the relaxed star gazing, Mom got to check out The Keep Liquor Bar for a complimentary cocktail.
The Keep Liquor Bar was packed! I snagged a seat at the bar and settled on craft cocktail called The Front Street Fizz. Quite the lively crowd but I couldn’t stay long since this was a family staycation.
I got back to the room and the kids had fallen asleep under the stars. How amazing is that? I crawled into bed and I felt like a kid again and every time there was a shooting star I smiled and wanted to pinch myself that I was staying in such a grand hotel.
The next morning we wandered over to The Keep for breakfast. The Keep features French inspired cuisine. We were seated with a window view of downtown. The Keep has a small menu but the cuisine is very authentic. I think my kids would have preferred a traditional breakfast but I was proud they ordered something new to try. Allison got the pastries, Joey had a croissant and gouda cheese (he loves gouda cheese!) and I had an omelet. Our food was delicious and we enjoyed tasting each others choices.
After breakfast we headed back to our room and decided to star gaze one last time with our projector and we almost fell asleep! We had a fabulous time and our Columbus Holiday Staycation will be hard to top next year.
Full Disclosure: Social Moms Around Columbus was hosted to a nights stay by Hotel LeVeque, Marriott Autograph Collection and to brunch by The Keep. These entities are owned and operated separately. The downtown lights and sites are FREE except for the meter parking cost! As always, all opinions are our own.
