What an absolutely gorgeous adventure to be invited on in Athens County! I will admit I wasn’t all to convinced about this adventure when I heard it was bike riding. I mean I have a bike….but is an old fashioned, chrome fenders, baby girl pink, big seat, look at me I am pretty bike. Obviously I am not an avid cyclist, but I decided why not?!
Mona and I drove down early on a Saturday morning and our first stop to fuel up for this biking adventure was at Fluff Bakery in uptown Athens. Lots of amazing bakery in the display cases but we decided that breakfast burritos would be better fuel for biking. We grabbed a window seat with a street view of Athens and looked at the trail map and figured out our plan for the day. Mona had the Veggie Burrito and to her surprise it was made with sweet potatoes. After breakfast we headed over to Athens Bicycle.
So, Athens Bicycle staff are super nice! When I first walked in I was a little paranoid that maybe they would not have a bike for me since I am short! The guys got a good laugh out of my short person worry and said they had a bike! The staff adjusted the bikes for Mona and I and off we went to find the Bikeway and some breweries!
First thing I figured out was Mona and I have ZERO sense of direction. We completely stink at reading maps. Mona got her phone out and decided to use the GPS and that proved to throw Mona off too on which way to go. So after a few deep breaths, I spotted the Bikeway entrance… and we had to go through a round about to get to it! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Some very gracious drivers let us through the round about in all our awkwardness…thank you. LOL
Finally on the Bikeway and what a gorgeous view! Sunshine, fresh air, flowers, trees…Southern Ohio is a gem. We pedaled our butts off into the countryside to come out of the bike path and see Little Fish Brewery up on a hill. We came to a halt. How the heck do we get up there? Oh, thats right Athens is a “bit” hilly. Inside I was like, if I have to get off this bike and walk it up that hill…. Mona was like you will be fine (love her empathy). We got up the hill and headed into Little Fish and the air conditioning was blasting and the beer was ice cold. We sampled a few brews and I settled on the Amber Bier. Lovely coriander taste. Next we headed to the edge of town to West End Cider House. I do not usually like ciders, but they had a refreshing strawberry and ginger-lemon cider. Mona and I were also drinking tons of water as the Bikeway is in the full sun and it was approaching 80. Make sure and hydrate if you go! Last stop was Jackie O’s in the heart of Ohio University’s campus and the hills just got bigger and more frequent to get to this spot. Make sure to consider your ability to bike this path! I had to get off my bike and walk it up two hills. I have never been so mad! Jackie O’s had food and ice cold brews. I looked at the menu, but I went with my favorite, Mystic Mama IPA and why not throw in some fried cheese curds after all that biking? Delicious.
We returned our bikes and drove over to the OU Inn, showered and headed back towards campus for a Mediterranean dinner at Restaurant Salaam. It was nice to just sit down at the end of the day. I ordered the Lemon Chicken Kabobs and Mona had the Moroccan Lamb Wrap. I was surprised that there was such an upscale ethnic restaurant in Athens. After dinner we walked around campus and I have to admit Ohio University is a beautiful lush green campus. The sun set and we were zonked from our adventure. It was an early to bed night for sure!
