Once again our soccer travels takes us to some great places i.e. Philly..in a few hours and we always have to figure out how we can squeeze in a few sightseeing places! This time we headed to Chicago Memorial Day weekend and we drove straight from Columbus to Chicago’s Willis Tower!
You put into your GPS toward the Willis Tower but once you get there it’s really the Sky Deck where you will want to get views of Chicago! We did not buy tickets in advance so we did have to buy them there. (A family of 5 cost us $99) Now we were waiting for about 45 minutes before we could even get on the elevator so it was good that we had older kids. I could see that it was harder for the smaller kids to sit still and wait. (That doesn’t mean that my kids didn’t complain!) Once we were on the elevator, the screen in the elevator gave us details about the Willis Tower comparisons to other tall buildings in the world!
After exiting the elevator, we then entered another room where we watched a movie of the history of the Wills Tower. (which we all know as formerly the Sears Tower!) It was an excellent movie which described how much steel they used, who designed it, etc. Following the movie, we were whisked away into another line to finally get to the Sky Deck! There are 4 glass bottom windows that you can stand in so get in line as soon as you can! As you can see from the pictures, it was an amazing experience and you should definitely stand on the glass bottom floor! (It’s worth the wait !)
Since it was a rainy day and we were hungry, we used our google maps to find the closest place to eat..luckily for us there was a Giordanos pizza place close by! I really wanted my kids to try a Chicago deep dish pizza so that was a bonus! Once we walked in, we were told that it was going to be a 45 minute wait but we should go ahead and order the pizza. We ordered pepperoni on half, and mushrooms and onions on the other half. Luckily, we only had to wait 20 minutes for a table. We did order a Ceasar salad prior to the pizza. Check out the deep dish pizza! Personally, deep dish is a very heavy pizza and my kids thought there was too much cheese but at least they can say that they now have tried a Chicago deep dish pizza!
We did both of these adventures our first day!
Our second day after the soccer game, we had a chance to head to the Navy Pier. There was a bit of heavy traffic getting there but there is parking at the pier. (TIP: Parking was $28, so maybe find a parking place within walking distance of the pier) There are plenty of shops, restaurants, a ferris wheeland boat tours from Navy Pier but we walked around and took the pics below!
The following evening at our hotel in the suburbs, it was time to try some Chicago dogs! One local chain that you can find around Chicago is Portillo’s! Here is a picture of the Vienna Beef Dog with s mustard, relish, celery salt, chopped onions, tomatoes, pickle and sport peppers on a poppy seed bun. Don’t leave Chicago without trying this Chicago style hot dog! Delish!
