Over the past few years, there has been a variety of “wine and paint” events around town at various locations around Columbus. Most of what I have seen are flower paintings…not very exciting in my book! Don’t worry, Studio 614 promises to end the doldrums of boring flower paintings as they offer paintings of a variety of sights around Columbus AND offer other art classes! Some of their classes include “Columbus Skyline painting,” “Short North painting” and currently they are offering “Infinity Scarf” classes! They are a traveling art studio, so you can book them for private parties, sign up for their classes around town, and they offer kids parties too!
Valerie and I had an opportunity to take the “Ohio Pride Painting” class in January at The Social Room (Arena District). I chose the OSU stadium painting and Valerie chose to do the Brutus Buckeye painting. The class was scheduled for 3 hours and included one drink. Since the Social Room did not offer any food items, Meg (owner of Studio 614) brought in some pizza for us. Meg had sketched out the pictures in advance and placed them on small easels at the tables. Included by your easel was paint colors on a plate, brushes and a cup of water to rinse out your paint too. Valerie and I had also gathered a few of our friends to join us in our first painting adventure!
Meg had instructed each group to mix colors to make the sky (mix blue and white) and every few minutes would instruct the 2 groups on how they should proceed. She and her team would also walk around and help you “fix” anything that you may have messed up or offer suggestions. I liked that Meg did the sketches on canvas in advance because it made it so easy to follow her instructions. Sometimes I would hand her my brush and she would make my OSU stadium painting look 1000 times better! With a “flick of her wrist” she would add a few strokes of color and made my painting look so good!
I only had one drink that evening because I was so focused on not messing up my painting. We all had a few laughs along the way about how good/bad artists we were too. Toward the end as I was walking around to see other people’s paintings, I noticed that no two paintings were alike. Some had more or less colors, less or more details, etc. In the end, you realized that everyone had really created their own piece of art!
At the end of the night, our friends told us that they had a really good time and they were glad that they came out to experience something new AND fun! Next time you are looking for something to do for a girls night out or date night, think of Studio 614!
