Winter House Cleaning Tips
When people think of a season for cleaning they often think of spring cleaning. However, with the weather warming a person’s to-do list can get overwhelmed with outside projects. It can be hard to get motivated in the cold months of January and February, but Sears Clean has four things you can take care of that you might put off once the warm weather comes around.
Wash and Disinfect Garbage Cans and Wastebaskets
Winter is a great time to focus on the things inside your house that get neglected. If you are going to be inside more this winter, you don’t want to be stuck with the germs or the smells garbage cans can collect.
For small waste baskets, a bucket of hot water and and bleach can provide all the disinfectant you need. The hot water will help break up any sticky residue left on the waste basket. Scrub the insides with a stiff bristle brush to remove any remaining residue. When you are done, you can simply dump it out in the sink and repeat the scrubbing process with cold water to rinse away the bleach.
For an environmentally safe way to sterilize these nasty grime collectors use vinegar mixed 50/50 with water.
Clean the Tops of Doors, Trim, and Artwork
Tables and countertops are often the first place you go when you pull the feather duster out, however there are a lot of horizontal surfaces that often get overlooked because they are out of reach. Just because we can’t see them doesn’t meant that dirt isn’t collecting there.
Take a day this winter and think outside the box when it comes to dusting. Dust the tops of interior doors, mirrors and artwork, upper kitchen cabinets, computer monitors and TVs, book shelves. The process might seem overwhelming at first, but you will feel great when you realize all the dust and dirt you removed.
Change Furnace Filters
This may seem like a no brainer, but it can often be one of those out of sight out of mind items.
If you have enjoyed a mild fall you may be kicking that furnass on for the first time in a while. Because you will be using it almost all winter long it is important to have a fresh air filter installed.
Air filters for furnaces are rated by level of efficiency. The higher the rating, the better the filter is at removing dirt, mold spores, and pet dander. These things will pollute your home even after you’ve thoroughly cleaned it so a quality air filter is key.
Have Your Carpets Cleaned
Winter is the season where your carpets can take the worst beating of the year. There are steps you can take to minimize the dirt and snow tracked into your house, but even the best laid plans can struggle against a family’s constant coming and going. A lot of the dirt brought in during the winter is not simply cleaned with a vacuum cleaner.
The best thing you can do for your carpets to is have them professionally cleaned when winter is coming to a close. However, the best time to schedule that appointment might be a month out depending on how busy the carpet cleaner is that time of year.
