Lately, there have been a lot of “escape” room places popping around Columbus. Our family had the opportunity to visit Room Escape Adventures in downtown Columbus. There were several rooms to choose from and our family decided on the room “Trapped with a Zombie.” In this escape scenario, you have 60 minutes to try to escape the room by finding clues. There is zombie trapped inside the room with you on a chain. Every 5 minutes the zombie’s chained loosened up by a foot. (Meaning that puts the zombie closer to touching you!) This room is recommended for 8 and up. Once you decide on the escape room, you can then book your one hour time slot online.
Upon arrival, you are then greeted by a “doctor”, sign a waiver, put your belongings in a locker and most importantly, go to the bathroom! (Nope, you can’t leave till the hour ends!) It is also highly suggested that you leave your phone in your locker. Pulling it out even once and then you are done with the game. The “doctor” then proceeds to tell you the background story of Dr. Oxy (the zombie) and how he had provided clues in room to escape.
Since this room adventure accommodates up to 12 people, there were 4 people with us for a total of 9. After brief introductions, we were all given blank name tags. We were all then instructed to write fictitious names. My middle daughter wrote “Don’t kill me” as her name tag and decided to go with the name Stacey so I was stuck with the “Don’t kill me” name tag! The “doctor” told us that she would be in the room and would also help out sometimes by darting her eyes in a certain direction to help us find clues. Finally, she said that if you get touched by the zombie that you are to stand in the X in the room and can’t move around anymore. You can however, still talk verbally to your other team mates.
Once we entered the room, there were various items that we saw and had to start sorting through to find clues! Don’t kid yourself, these clues are not easy to solve! Not only do you have to try to solve it but then you had sure the zombie was in one place. The trick was the sing songs so the zombie would stay in one place..I’ll admit our family was not good at doing that! The group of 4 was better at dancing and singing. So a small group would dance and sing while the other groups continued to solve/search for clues.
My 8 year old was a little nervous about the zombie but he would talk to her too. (Its meant to be funny and not scary) The “doctor” would also take my 8 year olds hand and guide to some clues. (I thought it was a very nice gesture to include her in the game) Since I could not take photos inside, here is a glimpse of the room (photos courtesy of Room Escape Adventures) :
Did we escape? Yes with 4:27 minutes to spare. Once we escaped, the “doctor” was evaluated each of us. I admit it that I didn’t contribute much because I kept trying to see if my youngest was ok but she was really fine!
In the end, everyone enjoyed themselves but I think we would have enjoyed it more with people that we knew. We will have to try another escape adventure again soon!
