Did you know that there is a baseball bat factory right here in Columbus? The company is called The Phoenix Bat Company and they are located in Plain City, Ohio. For $10, you can tour the factory AND get a mini souvenir bat at the end of the tour!
Upon entry, you enter the showroom where there are about 40 bats on display. This is where your tour guide starts off by telling you the history of the Phoenix Bat Company.
Some interesting facts that I learned: all the bats they made from maple and ash wood, a professional player can go through 100-150 bats per season and that they have been in business for over 10 years.
As you can see from the pictures, they make one bat at a time from their one bat machine. (The machine costs about $200,000) I couldn’t believe how much sawdust there is around when they producing bats. They recycle the sawdust to a local farmer who uses it for his animals.
Once the bats are complete, then then go to a “dipping” station for color. After that, they are send to the laser engraving station. (See picture) This place is good for older kids to visit on a tour as the factory location is small. (Unless your kids are really into baseball or softball!) This a fun, interesting place for kids AND adults!
