Ahhhh….the time has come I am going to have a highschooler. EEK! I headed to the parent meeting about the course selection process and overall tips on helping your soon to be 9th grader plan their dreams for college and careers. The presentation was upbeat and interesting then the topic of PE class comes up.
My mind wandered back to my days of highschool and PE class, although we called it gym class. I remember being completely relieved that they did away with mandatory showers right before I started 9th grade! Oh the days of the embarrassment of changing your clothes in the locker room and don’t forget the famous Physical Fitness Tests. I dreaded climbing that dangling rope in the gymnasium, and trying to do chin ups. Gym class was not my fav but I got through it.
So now fast forward to my parent meeting. I was stunned at all the options and waivers for PE class. How did this happen? I was kinda mad and jealous . I want my kids to take PE. It’s a right of passage. Online PE class! What! Log your fitness. Who knows if they really do what they log and its completed outside of school hours. Lifetime Fitness PE…pay extra to meet and do things like ski and canoe. Really? As the information and options poured out I started to look around the room and heard the grumblings and questions of parents in the audience. How do I get my kid a waiver? Do they have to take PE? What if they are in band? What if they play rec league soccer, does that count? BLAH BLAH.
I started to stew. Just take the PE class! Let them blow off some energy or feel re-energized during the day. Help put a stop to Childhood Obesity. You know we as Americans hear about being fat all the freaking time. I heard parents wanting to wave PE and substitute with another academic course and push thier child harder. We already have accelerated learning and have put to the wayside the idea of just being a kid sometimes.
I headed home shaking my head wondering what my daughter was going to choose for her course selection including all the PE options. Well, she chose online PE. Of course I am going to approve her choice and hold her to her commitment! RIGHT OF PASSAGE! LOL.
I still ask, “What’s the big deal about PE class?”
