All work and no play makes for unhappy Social Moms Around Columbus. So when Mona asked me to attend the 2016 BIA Parade of Homes preview (Powell, Verona subdivision) for bloggers and media with her, I jumped at the chance! You see, I consider myself great with color and big ideas, but terrible with accessorizing. If you’re like me, the BIA Parade of Homes is a great place to be inspired. And let’s face it…the Parade of Homes is great fun too!
First of all, you should know that this year’s parade is HUGE! There are 16 homes to tour and all of them are impressive. Here are the TOP TRENDS you will see throughout:
Shiplap – If you’re a fan of HGTV then you know what I’m talking about. If you aren’t…shiplap is most easily described as decorative wood on a wall. It can be rustic and distressed or painted. Shiplap has been used in several homes, but I particularly liked its application in the Compass Home. (And DON’T miss the BLACK painted eating area in the Compass Home…I’m obsessed with it’s beauty!)
Ropes – Many homes used ropes and pulleys as decorative touches to “hold up” bars, counter tops, sinks…I’m not sure where this trend came from but it will surely go out as quickly as it came in. That’s okay…if you can afford a million dollar home, then you can afford to redecorate in a few years.
Herringbone Patterns – Herringbone patterns were everywhere…on the floors, back splashes, in the fabrics and even on wallpaper. I just have to say that I love this trend. It is timeless and thankfully here to stay.
Outdoor Living Space – I know, I know…outdoor living spaces are nothing new. However, these homes are truly bringing the outdoors in. Don’t believe me? Visit the Weaver home where the pocket door disappears into the wall and opens onto a large covered porch with a gas fireplace. This can only be described as designer SEXY!
The Return of Gold– Mona is not at all happy about his one, but yes, gold fixtures are in again. Not the super shiny brassy looks of the past. The new gold is brushed, demure, and stunning. You may not see a lot of gold at the homes this year as it still is an emerging trend in the Midwest. (It’s already happened on the East/West coasts already)
Messy Kitchen/Dry Kitchen/Huge Walk-In Pantry/Butler’s Pantry – Okay, no matter what you call it, it’s genius. Be sure to visit the Bob Webb home and you’ll be renovating in no time. (Be sure to visit the Master Bath in the Bob Webb too. You could live in there!)
Top trend I did not care for….small living/family rooms. What’s the deal? Several homes had family rooms no larger than what I have in my 2,500 square foot home! This doesn’t make a bit of sense to me, but I’ll cross my fingers for next year…
