Trends. What trends? To be sure, there are plenty of home trends out there, but I can’t say the BIA Parade of Homes is hitting you over the head with them this year. You’re really going to have to look for the trends…or you could just read on. (I’ll gladly help you out!)
This year the homes are not massive, not over the top opulent, and you don’t have to win the lottery to live in them. Trend number one seemed to be the theme of the 2017 parade…attainable luxury. The parade features 9 homes with price tags in the $500,000-$600,000 range. Yes, I realize not everyone can afford these homes, but you are much more likely to be able to envision your family living here.
Next trend…RANCH living. Thank the Baby Boomers for this one. Even if you aren’t “old”, the ranches are sweet. More open feeling, less wasted space, and comfort all on one level. But don’t worry… The Boomers are still young enough to get up and down those steps so they have some awesome basement spaces for entertainment. 😉 Check out the Westport basement. It has a fun lighting display over the pool table, a huge wet bar, and I especially love the wall treatment to break up this massive space.
There is always a trend in tile and this year is no different. Homeowners are going with larger tile in a variety of areas….bathrooms, walls, floors, you name it. Large tile is a trend ready to take off because it means less grout scrubbing. I mean…does anyone like to scrub grout?!
The last big trend to notice is the open lighting and chandeliers. Exposed lightbulbs, less glass, and a streamlined look can be found everywhere. Remember the whole grout thing? The same goes for cleaning light fixtures. Less glass means less cleaning and the Gen Xers here at SMAC do not like to waste time cleaning!
Can I throw in a trend that needs to end? 5 level split…please go away! I get it. You’re affordable to build, you waste little space, and you were once shiny and new. You’ve officially been overdone. You’ve worn out your welcome. You cease to be unique and special. For the love of all that’s holy…I’ve had enough! You’ve been around so long that I’m starting to feel kind of awkward and weird around you. Can’t take the hint, 5 level split? I’m just not that into you.
Builders that were missed this year: Bob Webb, Weaver Custom Homes, 3 Pillars, and Romanelli & Hughes. What is a parade of homes without Romanelli and Hughes?
However, there’s no need to worry because there was a newcomer to the parade that BLEW ME AWAY! Preston Development had a gorgeous home that I couldn’t get enough of! I loved it so much that I had to go back in after the tour was over. If you do not have time for all 9 homes, make sure you do not miss the black and white beauty by Preston. This builder was in an entirely different stratosphere than the others, and I certainly hope to see another Preston home at the BIA Parade of Homes 2018!
**The 2017 parade is in the Cheshire Woods subdivision in Berkshire Township. The parade homes are in Olentangy SD, but the neighborhood spans into Big Walnut SD as well.
